In many classrooms, mathematics can resemble the left image: structured, controlled, and focused on getting the “right” answer in the same way. These structures aim to move learning toward the right: where students have access to ideas, multiple pathways are valued, and thinking is visible. By centering conceptual understanding and providing multiple strategies, they support equity through concepts, ensuring all students can engage deeply, while still experiencing the rigor needed to grow as mathematicians.
